Chapter 13 Skorpius Disintegrator

Welcome to Mars!

A front-line battle tank, the Skorpius Disintegrator hovers over the deserts of Mars. (I love the "Bumper Cars" aesthetic- Tabletop Hobbit)

This beauty comes with a choice of two main weapons as well as a stubber and missile launcher - nice!

Note there is a Handy Links Section included at the foot of this post.

This model is the same kit as the Dunerider so the assembly instructions are similar but I amended them slightly taking on board some things that enabled me to paint the hull section more easily and a lot quicker.

Assembly

I have added the link to the Dunerider build to the Handy Links Section at the end of this post.

This model comes with a comprehensive construction guide which I basically followed but held off full assembly based on what colours I wanted to paint each part. You might also want the take into account how accessible parts of the model will be after assembly. Leaving models in sub-assemblies can greatly increase access to parts that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

I'm not a fan of sub-assembly painting but it made sense to undercoat these parts separately.

I left the bumper rails off the hull for this one - it made access to the 'skirt' and its armour plates a lot easier for washing and highlighting those areas.

Magnetising the main weapons

I also magnetised the main weapons to make them seamlessly interchangeable. This was done by super-gluing a 5 mm diameter x 2 mm thick magnet inside the housing on the side of the turret. Some trimming and filing is necessary here.

You want to glue this in back from the opening for the gun barrels so that when you glue the magnets on to the end of the barrels, they will slide into the space, hiding the magnets.

Magnets were added to the rear of the weapons to facilitate the tank having a flexible load out.

Two more 5x2 magnets are glued directly onto the end of the cannons after trimming off the little plastic tag.

Hobby tip: Remember to test the magnet alignments before gluing them into place.

I found the best way was to glue one magnet onto one of the cannons, say the Belleros energy cannon, wait for the glue to dry then check the next magnet's alignment to the Belleros one and glue this to the Ferrumite cannon. Finally check the third magnet (which should now attract to both cannons in the same alignment) and be careful to maintain the right orientation before gluing that inside the turret housing.

Undercoat

I used Leadbelcher spray on the metallic areas and on the trooper manning the turret and Mephiston Red spray on the hull.

Painting

Painting the vehicle, I followed exactly the same methods that I used for the Onager Dunecrawler and subsequently, the Skorpius Dunerider.

The trooper manning the turret is basically the same as a Kataphron Destroyer and I used the same techniques I used to paint them.

These painting guides can be found in previous chapters, links can be found at the foot of this article.

I'm sure one or two more Disintegrators will be gliding their way over to join this fellow in the future.

Target acquired!........Target destroyed!
