Tomb Kings - Necrolith Colossus

I was always on the lookout for a model to represent the Necrolith Colossus in my Tomb Kings army. When the Hobbit spotted a 3D printed model on eBay and ran out of his hole shouting and squealing that it may be a good proxy, I thought I better take a look, if only to stop the neighbours complaining...

There is a big temptation for getting my Tomb King army match fit for the release of The Old World. (Assuming that the unit roster and base sizes will be similar to 8th edition).

When I saw the photo of it, I immediately recognised that it was, in fact, a great model to represent a Necrolith Colossus armed with a Bow of the Desert. Patting the little guy on the head, I couldn't really tell if the quality of print was good but decided to take a chance and ordered it. A few days later a Royal Mail hawk arrived with my Necrolith Colossus.

(Unfortunately, I cannot remember the vendor's details but the purchase went smoothly and the model parts arrived in good time).

Assembly

The model comes unassembled. The quality of print was very good with minimal areas requiring to be filed down. The model requires the arms and legs to be glued onto the torso (head is already attached to the torso) and subsequently the hands, holding the bow and an arrow are glued onto the arms and the feet glued to the legs. I used a regular superglue which worked just fine.

The original GW Bone Giant (predecessor of the Colossus) came on a 50x50 base so I attached this model to the same size base thinking this seemed best. I had to glue a piece of plastic below his left foot for stability. This would barely be visible after the base was painted and had sand glued on it to hide it as per the rest of the base.

Painting

The entire model was undercoated with Fur Brown spray from Army Painter.

Bone areas were base coated with Mournfang Brown then layered with Ushabti Bone leaving the joint areas and gaps between bones, eye sockets and more recessed areas as Mournfang Brown.

Metal areas where base coated with Leadbelcher or Retributer Armour theses areas were then weathered using Agrax Earthshade. I highlighted the edges of the gold areas with Retributer Armour to make them slightly more shiny looking.

Leather areas based with Rhinox Hide then layered with Steel Drab Legion.

The bow and arrow were painted Khorne Red.

Cloth areas with Stegadon Scale Green then layer highlighted with Sotek Green.

Pick Ups

The small piece of cloth tucked under the bracer on his left upper arm was base coated Stegadon Scale Green and layer highlighted Jade Green. This is a nod to my Tomb Prince on foot who usually leads The

Jade Legion; a unit of sword and shield skeleton infantry.

The canoptic jar on his back was basecoated white then I used Aethermatic Blue contrast paint to give it a translucent marble look. Basically one brushstroke of this as I wanted the white to still push through from underneath.

The rope attached to the arrow was base coated Rhinox Hide then highlighted with Baneblade Brown.

Base

The base, already base coated Fur Brown, received two coats of Orc Brown (a very old paint that you can still get from Cote de Arms) around the edges. The surface of the base is coated with sand. I use Citadel Sand for this and use a pva glue to secure it.

I added a small scorpion from the GW War Sphinx model to the base. This was base coated Kantor Blue and layer highlighted with Teclis Blue and a final highlight of Lothern Blue.

...and finally

I gave the entire model a light spray with matt varnish.
