Warhammer Fantasy - Dark Elves Chapter 8 - Har Ganeth Darkshards
Warhammer Fantasy - Dark Elves
Chapter 8
Har Ganeth Darkshards
Time to increase the core unit count of my Khainite force with some Darkshards. This will not only increase the unit count but enable me to field an army at a higher points level. Their addition will also give me some variety in unit type, in regards a bit of range, as most of the army is melee based.

I'm assuming Har Ganeth, as a major Druchii city, will be able to field a 'city guard' of some sort, (it certainly does in the Malus Darkblade novels - FD). I felt Darkshards seemed the most appealing and appropriate to start with, this will install some missile capabilities in the army.
Darkshards
These are the standard core unit box set models that can also be assembled as Bleakswords and Dreadspears. I had enough parts to assemble a unit of 14 models including a command group and I also decided to have them equip shields as they will also fit in with the Dreadspears to create a city guard unit at a later date..
Assembly
The unit was pretty straight forward to assemble. The bulk of the time spent on this was clipping the hand/wrist parts off the shields as I had decided that they would be slung over their backs. Just use clippers to snip off the bulk of the hand then carefully trim down the rest with a craft knife, it doesn't have to be too precise, as you need something to stick to the elves backs.
The only other consideration in assembly of a warhammer fantasy unit is to ensure the models will rank up. The crossbows stick out a little so watch the positioning of the models before gluing them down.
All the parts used were standard for the Darkshards apart from the shields and the head of the Guardmaster. I swapped his head out for an Executioner model head to look more "Khainite" like.
I also had a spare 20mm x 80mm base so I mounted 4 elves on it.
Basing
Cover the bases with some a few small cork chips and fine sand using careful application of PVA glue adhesive and let dry.
Undercoat
After these have dried, we undercoat them with Army Painter Matt Black spray.
Painting
All the chainmail and armoured areas are painted with Leadbelcher and then washed with Nuln Oil.
The shield icons/edges, helmet spikes and groin guards as well as the Guardmaster mask are painted Brass Scorpion and also washed with Nuln Oil. There is also a brass plate near the trigger mechanisms of the crossbows that can be picked out with Brass Scorpion. I did this after I had painted the wood.
The robes, shields and banner are painted with Mephiston Red then washed with Carroburg Crimson, once dry, re layer to the midtones with Mephiston Red on the raised areas and highlight extreme edges with Evil Sunz Scarlet.
Basecoat the hands and faces (including the back of the Guardmaster's head) with Rhinox Hide then layer on Rakarth Flesh. Wash this with a 3:1 ratio mix of Lahmian Medium to Agrax Earthshade ensuring this settles in the recesses of the skin. Then highlight with Rakarth Flesh. You can lighten this further by mixing in some Pallid Wych Flesh into the Rakarth Flesh. I prefer the duskier look myself so I leave it.
The wood and leather parts are based with Rhinox Hide then layered with Mournfang Brown before receiving an Agrax Earthshade wash.
The bases are painted Rhinox Hide then the cork pieces and sand are dry brushed firstly with Mournfang Brown and then with Karak Stone.
Pick out the edges of the shoulder guards and the tips of the crossbow bolts with Runefang Steel.

Finally, I add some grass flock to the bases and the transfer is applied to the standard then all models are taken out the back and sprayed with a light coat of matt varnish. (This keeps the models safe from That Tabletop Hobbit's sticky mitts - FD)
Har Ganeth Assembles for War!
So the great weapon wielding shades are up next in the form of Menghil's Manflayers adorned in Khaine's blood red tunics and freshly flayed human skins!
