Warhammer Fantasy - Dark Elf - Chapter 3,4&5 - Khainite Witch Elves, Cauldron of Blood and Crone Hellebron
Warhammer Fantasy - Dark Elves
Chapter 3,4&5
Khainite Witch Elves, Cauldron of Blood and Hellebron
Progress Shot |
Crone Hellebron stands astride a Cauldron of Blood to lead her Witch Elf unit to bloody slaughter! |
The latest recruits to my Khainite Dark Elf force are shown here together; as they are intended to be used, a whirling mass of blood, hair and blades, Hellebron and her unit join the two Death Hags (See that HERE) in Part 2 to form a unit of pointy-whirly death....Mwahahaha!!
That's over 1100 points (8th edition army Book) of Lords/Heroes and Core. They will be joined by my Khainite War-Hydra (See that HERE) from Chapter 1 to get me to almost halfway towards my 2000 point target and trailblazing the way in the Tale of 3 Gamers - Their little legs will never keep up!
Hellebron
I had to do a bit of repair work here as "Deathsword" had broken off part-way up the blade and the shard was nowhere to be found. I do have a second Hellebron model that I'll paint up eventually. I decided to repair Deathsword using a spare blade section from a High elf Dragon Prince sword.
First I filed down the area where the break had occurred, I then super-glued the parts together and when dry, filed down the join. She was painted using the same techniques used to paint the two Death Hags in Chapter 2.

The Cauldron of Blood
If for some reason you value your life so little that you ever decide you have to paint his model then remember this warning - complete painting before gluing it together. It has been, by far, the most annoying model I've ever had to paint! (I blame the Hobbit - FD)
I do have another Cauldron of Blood model which I'll be building up as the Medusa Shrine and I reckon I'll largely be painting it in sub assemblies... Now, Having said that - it came out not too bad. I tried to keep it simple and just went for base colours with one highlight, it will always be surrounded by a rabid pack of hair spray and lip gloss anyway.
Now a controversial idea - I know, but I decided not to attach the Statue of Khaine to the back of the cauldron so I could easily interchange Hellebron with a Death Hag model. Perhaps, given I have a statue of Khaine already, as you can see from the images of the Altar of Khaine. I will at a later date make him into an interesting piece of terrain to go with these Khainites.
Painting Steps
1. Everything was undercoated with good old Chaos Black spray.
2. A Mephiston Red layer was applied to the areas of the Cauldron that I could get to.
3. This was then highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet.
4. Then Leadbelcher was added for the metal areas.
5. I like to pick out some metals with Scorpion Brass
6. Wash all the metal with Nuln Oil.
7. Pick out the blade edges and some of the other metal details with Chainmail.
8. The steps were layered with Mechanicus Standard Grey and the inlay design on the steps was picked out with Nuln Oil. Then the edges of the steps were highlighted with Dawnstone.
9. The railings and handrails were painted Abaddon Black with a Mechanicus Grey edge highlight.

Witch Elves and Hag
I had two boxes of these - that's a total of 20 models but I wanted them to be in a horde formation....hmmm? I want to get as much frontage on this unit as possible, with something like 70 attacks possible (62 base plus D3 for Hellebron and D6 + 1 for the impact hits) in combat with a foe (we dont have "foes", just future victims - Gildoren) of the same size you will be able to carve your way through most things you will find on a Warhammer Battlefield.
Well horde formation is is mostly taken care of by including the Cauldron - it takes care of the equivalent of 9 or 12 models depending on the number of ranks.
I fancied having them 4 ranks deep so decided to utilise a couple of spare 40 x 40 mm bases and a 20 x 80 mm base to effectively double the footprint of 6 models.
That gave me a 4 rank deep horde of 26 Witch Elves with full command joined by two Death Hags (one being the battle standard) and Hellebron on the Cauldron....ouch - that's gonna hurt!
The Shattered Temple terrain set provided the torch stands - I clipped the wall brackets off them and glued them into a little green stuff that I had glued onto the base.
The Witch Elves were painted using the same techniques as outlined in the Death Hag article.

This is the army I'm looking to get fully painted and I reckon I'm well on the way to completion.
I know it's not an optimised army list but this project is mainly to get models painted rather than entering any competitions although I fancy playing them in a Triumph and Treachery game vs the Fat Dwarf's Army and the Hobbit's Daemons.
Watch out for the Executioners and the Khainite Assassin in the next instalments.
Khaine!!!!! (Delivered in William Shatner 'Khan!!' style).
