Chapter 2 - Khainite Death Hag Battle Standard
We've decided to create a series based on an old White Dwarf article called "A Tale of Four Gamers", in which the participants buy and paint up models for their fantasy battle armies.
I recently acquired numerous reinforcements for my Druchii Army (cast off Dark Elves from the Tabletop Hobbits larder of grey plastic) and a great many of them were Black Guard/Executioner models. I also had a box of the plastic Witch Elves that I could add to my already assembled ones.

It was therefore quite an easy decision to choose a Dark Elf army for this project and furthermore, I'm going to dedicate it to the Lord of Murder and construct my force to the glory of Khaine. You can see the Khainite Temple previously blogged. I will be building my force around this!
I said KHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIINNNNNEEEE!!!!!
Death Hag Battle Standard
There was never a model to represent this character so I've had to convert an existing model.
The main body of the conversion is the Death Hag model holding a chalice from the Cauldron of Blood/Bloodwrack Shrine kit. I have two of these kits as I intended to build up both variants so had a spare for this project. It's a good idea not to glue it to it's base yet.

HOBBY TIP: If your'e planning on placing models in units then it's a good idea to make sure they rank up without too much trouble. Check positioning of the model before gluing it to the base.
The other parts I used were the banner icon and cross-pole from the Cold One Knights kit, the banner from the Black Guard/Executioner kit and the left arm and banner pole from the Witch Elf/Sisters of Slaughter kit.
Assembly
Clip the banner pole just below the bottom ring. This is because the pole won't fit in the groove on the back of the banner if you leave the rings on. You could file them down to the same diameter as the pole but I chose to clip them off then use a section of another banner pole (about 10mm long) to fill the gap. This keeps the banner up high on the model - it's a Battle Standard after all so should have a 'stand out' effect beyond a mere unit standard.
It's better to wait until the banner arm has been attached to the Death Hag first before attaching the actual banner as this firstly, enables you to have the banner orientated correctly when the replacement arm has been glued and set and secondly, keeps the weight of the left arm and banner pole down while you glue it on.
Take the Death Hag model and the Witch Elf left arm holding the banner pole. Before clipping off the Death Hag's left arm have a look at the angle of the replacement arm so you can clip off the chalice arm at a point that matches this.
Glue the banner arm to the Death Hag - you will need to use a little green stuff to fill the joint, when set, carefully cut away the excess and mould to shape. I found I needed to pack out the armpit slightly and used the bottom end of a small paintbrush to push into the green stuff to get the right shape.
Note there is a Handy Links Section included at the foot of this post.
Clip off the two spear-tip shaped ends of the cross-pole from the banner - you don't need these bits so dispose of them as you will.
I use a sharp craft knife to separate the the banner icon and cross-pole parts. if you're a young "Beardling" as the dwarf would say then get a grown up to do this for you.

Tidy up these parts so as to ensure good contact when gluing them together. The two cross-pole pieces can be glued onto the banner in place of the two spear-tip shaped parts we clipped off earlier.

The banner pole icon /top can also be glued to the top of the banner.
So we now have the Death Hag with her new banner pole arm and we have a new banner which can now be attached at the angle you want. I glued in the 10mm banner pole section first, leaving enough of the banner groove available to glue in the top of the banner pole.
Check positioning in unit then glue to the base - job done!
Painting
As you can see, I chose a suitably Khainite colour scheme. Nothing fancy here other than maybe the 3:1 Lahmian Medium to Agrax Earthshade wash I used on the skin. I like the dusky look to the skin so didn't bother to highlight it as the 3:1 mix brought out the definition of the features at an acceptable standard for me. I also shiver at the thought of having to paint eyes...so I didn't!
HOBBY TIP: DO YOUR RESEARCH! I picked out the Khaine transfer from the Dark Elf transfer sheet (had to check the 8th Edition Dark Elf army book for this - it has a Pantheonic Mandala on p34 which gives a comprehensive guide to the Elven gods and their sigils).
Army Progress
The Death Hag joins the War Hydra (see link) in the ranks of the Khainites. Time to get some bums on seats in the next article so look forward to a few Witch Elves being recruited (not something to look forward to if you're at the pointy end!).
