Chapter 9 Kastelan Robots & Cybernetica Datasmith
Welcome to Mars!
A Quartet of Kastelan Robots can cause anyone a headache. The Tech-priests have been working overtime to ready these deadly robotic constructions for the battlefield. Accompanied by a Datasmith (who become the first "elite" choice in the martian force). These heavy support models utilise awesome firepower and pummelling melee attacks that certainly require the enemy generals' full attention.
The Datasmith was painted using the same techniques described in Chapters 4 & 5 and the Robots as per the description below. AssemblyI decided to build two of each main weapon type - two with heavy phosphor blasters and two with fists. I also mounted a different shoulder weapon on each one of the same type giving me four different variations. (Normally, I like to field models that are armed as per the army list but don't mind using proxy models, especially if they are of the same type but just armed differently. However, if I do acquire more robots, I may look to magnetise their weapons so I can interchange them). Hobby Tip: I like to use the selection of Magnets in the above link to make use of different options on my kits where possible, for relatively little cost and effort you can get a good flexibility in your model kit. Link below for further help. I assembled the models as per the instructions but did not glue them to their bases at this point. |
Painting
Undercoats
I sprayed the bases with Army Painter Fur Brown and the robots Citadel Leadbelcher.
I then glued the model to the base.
Basecoats
All the metallic areas received a thinned down layer of Leadbelcher then I picked out a few areas of the model with Brass Scorpion.
All the armoured areas received a thinned down layer of Mephiston Red.
Washes
All metallic areas were washed with Nuln Oil to bring out the details of edges, rivets etc. Just make sure to avoid the wash pooling on flat surfaces.
HOBBY TIP: Your paintbrush can soak up excess wash if it's not already loaded with it. If you get an area of 'pooling' you can either use whatever wash is left on your brush on another area of the model and then return to soak up the pool or you can have a second 'dry' brush handy to soak it up. Remember, either way, you need to soak it up before its starts drying or you will end up with the wash drying around the edges leaving unsightly blotches.
The armoured areas received a wash of Carroburg Crimson making sure that it settled in the recesses between the armour sections.
Layer
All raised areas of the armour were layered with a thin coat of Mephiston Red. Avoid painting the recessed areas as we want hem to be a darker red.
The visor was layered with a coat of Runefang Steel.
Highlight
Pick out all the armour edges, rivets etc with Evil Sunz Scarlet and the most raised areas of the metallic areas with Leadbelcher.
Basing
The base was done in the same way as described in previous chapters of Welcome to Mars.
Bits and Bobs!
Just a couple of things to do...
Firstly, there are a few areas that are painted blue, like the pipe on the flamers and the data cards in the chest area. These were painted Teclis Blue and highlighted with Lothern Blue.
Secondly, apply the transfers you want then lightly spray the model with matt varnish.
Lastly, I applied a glaze of Guilliman Blue to the visor. This is done after varnishing to avoid the glaze going cloudy. When applying the glaze, I let some settle towards the bottom edge of the visor which gives it a bit more depth.
That's us done! Just need the Datasmith to program these beauties and there off to punch some Chaos Space Marines in the face!
All praise the Omnissiah!
