Chapter 7 Tech-Priest Enginseer & Munitorum Armoured Container
Welcome to Mars!
This post is somewhat of a "catch all" |
Techpriest Enginseer |
Tech-Priest Enginseer
The Enginseer joins Belisarius Cawl as the second HQ in my Martian army. This character provides valuable repair skills to Mechanicus vehicles, keeping them operational on the battlefield, despite the damage they've taken.
The Enginseer was painted using the same techniques outlined in Welcome to Mars chapters 4 & 5 (find a link to those here and here).

Munitorum Armoured Container
Looking to up pour 40K terrain selection, we recently purchased the Munitorum Armoured Container scenery set from The Outpost see for yourself the great deals and we were pleasantly surprised at the volume of barrels and crates that come with the actual containers - and you get three sprues! So, I decided to start getting this ready for the battlefield and, thinking about my logistics.. chose an appropriate Mechanicus colour scheme. RED...
The first thing I had to decide was what configuration I wanted the container to be in. Both doors shut, both open or one shut, one open, I don't know. The easiest is both shut because you won't need to paint the interior but I reckoned it would be best to go with one shut, one open to start with.
The second thing I decided on was how I wanted it to look in regards to wear and tear. I decided to go with 'well maintained'. The portly Dwarf and I talked about this after I'd shown him the finished article. He would have opted for the worn look but I convinced him that the Mechanicus would look after their gear and would have plenty of oily rags to wipe down surfaces with!
Undercoating
As I decided to paint the interior of the container, I thought it best if I paint the components before assembly.
After clipping off the pieces and shaving off any mould lines and burrs, I undercoated the exterior of the container pieces with Mephiston Red Spray. Once this was dry I flipped the pieces over and undercoated the interior side with Leadbelcher spray. I did it this way round as any stray Leadbelcher spray could be painted over with Mephiston Red when the container has been assembled.
Interior
I wanted to keep this simple so just a base thin coat of Leadbelcher over the interior walls, floor and ceiling (including the light fittings). I applied a wash of Aggrax Earthshade over this and allowed it to dry. I basecoated the sections of the lights with Skull White and once this is dry I applied a thin layer of Bad Moon Yellow (Note the elfs advanced years, this is a very Old Citadel paint from the days of the elven colonies in the Old World, FD).
That just leaves the interior door control panel. This was painted Brass Scorpion then the screen and buttons were painted with Dark Angels Green (Again a rather Old paint, not he contrast version) and Nurgling Green. The emergency button at the bottom was then painted Evil Sunz Scarlet.
That's it for the interior - no need to go to great lengths as it is mostly out of view, and indeed it is always in shadow.
Exterior
Applied a thin layer of Mephiston Red over the entire exterior except the vent grills, lights and the 'beaks' of the grapple points which received a thin layer of Leadbelcher. This gave the whole container a look of being used but well maintained. I applied a layer of Mephiston Red to the raised areas and highlighted the edges and rivets with Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The exterior lights were painted exactly the same as the interior ones described above.
The grills were highlighted with Leadbelcher and Brass Scorpion was used to paint the skull icons.
The door control panels were painted last. The casing was painted in Leadbelcher. The skull was base coated Mournfang Brown and layered up with Ushabti Bone - the eyes picked out with Leadbelcher and Evil Sunz Scarlet respectively. The keypad was painted Brass Scorpion and the buttons highlighted with a nice bright coat of Nurgling Green.
(I include a series of links at the end to find the colours and minis in this post.)
I then applied a few transfers from the Adeptus Mechanicus transfer sheet to finish the look and make sure nobody mistook these supplies for Cadian supplies...
To finish I give the whole model a light dusting of dry matt varnish.
Promethium Barrels
These were undercoated with Chaos Black spray.
I applied a base coat of Hobgoblin Orange (Again...Old paint) on the upper and lower parts. Then I applied a base coat of Mephiston Red around the middle. Base coat the top, middle, emblems, tap and separation rings (including the rivets) with Abbadon Black.
Then apply a second coat of Hobgoblin Orange to the upper and lower parts.
Paint the top, middle, tap and separation rings/rivets with Leadbelcher and the emblems with Brass Scorpion.
Once dry, wash the entire barrel with Aggrax Earthshade for that oily but slightly dusty look.
To finish, as always: Lightly spray with matt varnish.

Mechanicus Ammo/Supply Crates
Undercoat these with Mephiston Red spray. (I include a series of links at the end to find the colours and minis in this post.)
To start base coat all the raised areas and the emblem with Abbadon Black. Then base coat the flat areas of the crate with a layer of Mephiston Red.
To follow, layer all the raised areas with Leadbelcher and the emblem with Brass Scorpion. Once dry, apply a wash of Nuln Oil.
Then after this is done, apply transfers from the Adeptus Mechanicus transfer sheet.
To finish, as always: Lightly spray with matt varnish.
That's the first Container done. I've got a second one to do and the Hobbit has taken one to paint up in Adepta Sororitas colours (isnt that just chaos black? FD). The second one won't take as long as I plan to do it with doors shut - so no need to paint he interior!
I am currently working on some Kataphron Destroyers to complete my troop choices for fielding a battalion - look for them and a review of the army in Welcome to Mars, Chapter 8!
Praise the Omnissiah!
