I have to recreate a martian industrial landscape....on a table...!!!...no problem!
First up, I'm ahead of the curve, as I have a desert themed game-mat. These game-mats are really good. They are made of a similar material to a mouse mat. Therefore they are gentle on falling models and are a good surface for rolling dice on. The main benefit of these mats are they hold their shape after rolling up at the end of the battle, no creases or wrinkles despite numerous battles, and rolling up into their own bag, are easily stored.
Secondly, I've managed to acquire a fair amount of industrially themed scenery which I'm going to paint up over the next few months.
In 9th edition 40K, scenery has become more important and much of it has specific rules that may effect line of sight, movement, etc. The recommended amount of scenery on the battlefield looks like it has increased so having a good selection of pieces will be helpful.
I've already painted up a Munitorum Armoured Container in Mars colours (Welcome to Mars - Chapter 7) along with some crates and barrels. It's time to get some heavy lifting vehicles to move them around the battlefield.

Galvanic Servohaulers
There are 3 models in this set, a large crane and two smaller plant vehicles / tractors.
Assembly
Crane: I only assembled the engine and the claw sections and left the rest to make access to all parts easier for painting later.
Tractors: Similar to the crane - I left the tracked sections and the machine arms separate until painting.

Undercoat
All three were undercoated with two thin coats of Citadel Leadbelcher spray paint.
Basecoats
All metallic areas were base coated with a thin layer of Leadbelcher.

All yellow areas were base coated with Tittillating Pink ... yeah...that's not a typo! this is a very old Citadel Paint, as shown below, this may even have been released back in the 80s... Shows that flip top lids are not responsible for drying your paints if anything does - Fat Dwarf
A good modern equivalent, cheap enough for the Undercoat would be AK acrylics Intense Pink.
The tracks were painted with Aggaros Dunes contrast paint.
The plasma coils and pipes were based with Teclis Blue.
Paint the sections of the lights with Skull White. Or White Scar, this elf is ancient - Fat Dwarf.
Hobby Tip: So I came across this little nugget of wisdom in the High elven archives in Lothern, written and composed by a mage of the highest order at Goobertown Hobbies, this little instruction incantation will illuminate your understanding of painting yellow over a dark undercoat... Gildoren.
Finding the lost Tome of Goobertown helped with the undercoat choice. |
Layer Painting
Pick out some of the metallic areas and apply a layer of Brass Scorpion.
Paint two layers of Golden Yellow (Yriel Yellow)over the pink waiting for the first layer to dry before painting the second.
A nice vibrant yellow was the result of the undercoat in pink. |
Apply another layer of Aggaros Dunes to the tracks.
Use Chainmail (or Leadbelcher) to paint the piston rods.
Paint the sections of the lights with Bad Moon Yellow (or Flash Gitz Yellow!).
Check and fix
I don't mind making a few mistakes here and there. If I should let the brush slip and accidentally get some yellow on a metallic area then I'll just pick that up and correct it at this stage just before applying the washes.
notice the old goblin green sand texture on these boards under the game matt. |
This takes the stress out of trying to be perfectly exact with your painting especially in areas that are hard to access. For example, the Lothern blue power glow in the grill of the bigger tractor is a lot less daunting if your not worried about getting the blue on the metallic grill as you'll just paint over the errors with Leadbelcher tidy it up before applying the Nuln Oil wash, I use the Gloss version for oily bits like this, but each to their own.
Washes
Wash all metallic areas with Nuln Oil and all yellow bodywork with Aggrax Earthshade. Let the washes settle in the ridges and around rivets.
Highlight
Use Lothern Blue to highlight the plasma coils and pipes.
Pick out the rivets with Leadbelcher.
Pick ups
There are a few hoses, screens, buttons, lights etc. that can all be painted to your personal preference but are clearly shown in the pictures if you fancy finishing the models off in the same manner.
Final Assembly
All components should be painted now and final assembly should be straightforward. Just follow the assembly leaflet, these will be no challenge to even a junior Techpriest...
