Painting Scenery Review -Tweaking Gale Force Nine Battle Field in a Box Terrain
I’m a big fan of pre painted terrain and scenery, Gale Force Nine have seen a fair bit of business from me over the years, but I do always feel the need to tweak the finishes to better match my own collection. Don’t get me wrong here, this is how I want it, GF9 take the painting far enough that they can be happily applied to your gaming table. However they can also be given a further 20% to take them to a good finish and bedded into your own collection.
Swamps/Toxic Pools
The swamp comes with a flat matt coat of dark green on the liquid surface, I see these fitting in with both my Necromunda collection and my Ogre Kingdom Army from Warhammer Fantasy. But I had just received the new Contrast paint set and I thought after playing a bit with them, that I could add a wet shimmer and yellow fade with these to add some depth to the liquid areas. The pools come with a little bag of static grass to bed them into a standard gaming matt, but you will want to dry brush the rough texture at the edge of the pools, as this texture is a good match for any sand you would normally apply to a base. I treated it the same as my bases..

I used a selection of yellow-green Contrast paint selection to add to the bubble effects and to add some depth to the surface of the liquid. After the graduation of the yellow finish was completed satisfactorily I added a layer of PVA to protect the surface, and its sheen.
After this set I added a variation of scorched grass to match my fantasy table, and some bleached static grass around the toxic pool itself.
I think these turned out great, for such a small effort, but let us know what you think in the comments below.
