Review - The Star Trek Destiny Trilogy by David Mack
Review - Star Trek Destiny Trilogy by David Mack
The Star Trek franchises (the 90s tng/ds9/voyager series particularly) have long been a draw to me, I’ve recently begun reading some of the novels after hearing about the best of them following the “What We Left Behind” documentary on Deep Space Nine and their proposed 8th series/season teasers.
Starting my review series with David Mack’s Destiny trilogy, I understand that this is often touted as the best or at least one of one of the best of the series of novels. I had it recommended to me by several different people, so I thought I'll give it a go.
I admit that I had low expectations of Star Trek novelisations and novels, I have heard many derogatory opinions on them, but as I understand there are so many that surely there is a great variation in quality.
SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!

The Amazon product review sums up the synopsis as follows:

Description on the Book
Half a decade after the Dominion War and more than a year after the rise and fall of Praetor Shinzon, the galaxy’s greatest scourge returns to wreak havoc upon the Federation – and this time its goal is nothing less than total annihilation.
Elsewhere, deep in the Gamma Quadrant, an ancient mystery is solved. One of Earth’s first generation of starships, lost for centuries, has been found dead and empty on a desolate planet. But its discovery so far from home has raised disturbing questions, and the answers hearken back to a struggle for survival that once tested a captain and her crew to the limits of their humanity.
From that terrifying flashpoint begins an apocalyptic odyssey that will reach across time and space to reveal the past, define the future, and show three captains – Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise, William Riker of the U.S.S. Titan, and Ezri Dax of the U.S.S Aventine – that some destinies are inescapable.
BriefingThe action takes place over two time frames, Captain Hernandez leads the crew of the Columbia (earths second warp capable starship) during the Earth-Romulan War, This action happens before the formation of the United Federation of Planets and the majority of events in the books occur post Star Trek Nemesis. This trilogy touches each of the four later Star Trek Series; The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise.
Ezri Dax leading the crew of the Aventine below features as the lead act in the first book. Her crew are in the Gamma Quadrant investigating the wreckage and the events leading to the disappearance of the Columbia.
Jean-Luc Picard leads the Enterprise E in Book 2.
The "Rikers" now married and expecting, are leading the USS Titan as the lead in Book 3.
Trouble is brewing for the Rikers...
Ok, so I've been light on the events of the books, that because I really want you to read this trilogy (get the trilogy book from the link at the end). What I would say is the events of this book intertwine the characters of the four later series in a detail that builds on the character foundations you already know, and deals with the war against the greatest threat that the galaxy has seen... Buy the Trilogy and then leave a comment on how much you enjoyed it, trust me, you like Star Trek? you wont be disappointed...
The Aventine and the Enterprise together occurs in Book 2, as they attempt to investigate the methods used by the Borg to attack the Federation.
I do really enjoy a good saga.
Have I told you about that time I ended a goblin with my belly?
