Warhammer Fantasy - High Elves - Gildoren's High Elf Sea Patrol Army List Chapter 2

Warhammer Fantasy - High Elves

Gildoren's High Elf Sea Patrol Army List Chapter 2

The very first army I started painting were the High Elves. This was probably way over 20 years ago! So with that in mind, a lot of the models in the Sea Patrol are my first proper attempts at painting and converting, and in the days when that was a real undertaking as there was not the fantastic range of Games Workshop kits that there are now.

If your interested in the Army List,  you can find this in Chapter 1 here, or cycle on to our blog where you can find a whole load of interesting reads.

In this; Chapter 2 of this article series, We'll go through all the units in the list and describe some of the conversions I undertook.

Sea Lords and Sea Helms

The Noble Sea Lords of Lothern.

There are a wealth of models that can represent the commanders of the Sea Patrol. I also have 2 Sea Helm models from the Skycutter kit. Unfortunately I've not got round to painting these yet but hope to have one ready for Chapter 3. In addition to that you can also field Sea Lords on Griffons or Great Eagles. There is the Eltharion model and the Lord on Griffon from the Island of Blood set that can be used.

Storm Weavers and Mist Mages

It wouldn't be a High Elf list if it didn't come with outrageous magical support..

Again, many models to choose from. The Storm Weaver on the Great Eagle was converted from parts left over in the High Elf Lord on Dragon kit and the Eagle from the Lord of the Rings range of models. The original eagle models always looked way too small for me - especially when you put a rider on them. Mounted on a 50x50 base and the rider is actually pinned (not glued) to the eagle so it can dual as a stand alone Great Eagle or swap the rider to a Sea Lord or Sea Helm if required.

Lothern Seaguard

Lothern Seaguard units are multi role combat troops, Royal Marines of the Warhammer World

I have 3 units of Seaguard. The old metal models still look fantastic despite my poor painting skills above! I also have the standard build from the plastic kit which was the basic High Elf Infantry box. Thirdly, I have a unit from the Island of Blood box set which look amazing but I haven't gotten round to painting them yet. If you are really stuck for Seaguard models you could always proxy some archers and spearmen models. Need a second Seaguard unit try a front rank of kneeling archers with spearmen in the back ranks - looks great.

Ship's Company

Easy. Standard Archers - we all have them right? Just remove your standard bearer model and you are sorted. I also have a light armoured unit, converted using Archer sprue legs and arms with Spearmen heads and torsos.

Lothern Skycutters

Skycutters form the role of outriders and flanking units within the Lothern list, as it lacks any other kind of cavalry or chariot.

The Skycutter kit gives you a couple of variants. The standard build gives you a flying chariot with 3 crew. An option is to swap out a crew member for light bolt thrower. Lastly it can be used as a mount for Sea Lords and Sea Helms. The box actually contains a Sea Helm model that has an option to become a Battle Standard.

It takes a brave elf to crew a Skycutter, especially over the ocean.

slightly stockier than the Great Eagle, to provide the extra thrust required.

A light bolt thrower can also be added to the vessel, for interception duties.

Sea Rangers

Old model Shadow Warriors work well for Sea Rangers.

Shadow Warrior models work well here. You could use any of the last three incarnations to represent them. I merely slapped some blue paint over the original grey on my older models and hey presto - Sea Rangers!

Great Eagles

An excellent selection in any High Elf list. Most Asur players will have at least 1 Great Eagle model. I replaced the original smaller metal models by buying the 2 plastic Eagles from the Lord of the Rings range and mounted them on 50x50 bases. They look really good and lend themselves to being able to be used as mounts.

Eagle Claw Bolt Throwers

I have 4 of the metal ones, all mounted on 50x50 bases. I think I have another plastic one somewhere and if I ever get round to painting the third Seaguard unit from The Island of Blood set, I'll be able to field it in this list.

Merwyrm

Time for Dinner..

This was one of my first major conversion projects. Back in 2004 there was no Merwyrm model for sale. I seem to recall that there may have been some conversions showcased in White Dwarf but Sea Patrol players either had to proxy in another existing model or create their own.

My Merwyrn was made from the head and body of the Wood Elf Dragon along with harpy wings and loads of green stuff to form the fins and tail.

Nowadays, luckily for us, we have the Kharibdyss model that could easily be used as a Merwyrm. I may look to refurbish my converted Merwyrm sometime. Forgeworld also have a gorgeous model merwyrm, but for me that model is to chunky.

We have tried to keep it simple in the 8th edition style and maintain cohesion with what is available within the 8th edition High Elf Army Book. So remember you will need this to run this list.

The "Commanders View"

In Chapter 3 we will be looking to play test these rules, but due to the unfortunate Corona virus issues that may not be for some time. So in the meantime let us know in the comments below how you're getting on, and what you think of this series, and suggestions on where we can go next? I've suggested we have a couple of other High Elf lists we have worked on amongst ourselves previously, and we will share these when we are ready.
