Warhammer Fantasy - Warriors of Chaos - Throgg, King of Trolls

Warhammer Fantasy - Warriors of Chaos Throgg, King of Trolls

Its Time to blog the Throgg!

Throgg, King Of Trolls and Hero choice for the Warriors of Chaos.
First up, I'm not a fan of the Finecast resin models which where prevalent during the last few years of Warhammer Fantasy. The minis were often designed to be pewter or “white metal” and due to the limitations of the soft resin are often warped or the surface sometimes has small imperfections. When I bought Throgg, I was a bit concerned that these defects would cause me some problems but thankfully as this model was towards the end of the finecast period where quality control had improved, the quality of this Throgg was pretty good.
HOBBY TIP: Heat can be used to straighten out warped parts of resin models. The method I prefer to use is to submerge the warped section in very hot water for a several seconds. This makes the resin malleable for a few seconds and as once heated it can be coaxed back into shape, as long as you work briskly! Take care using hot water. Do not put your fingers in it - hold part of the model that is away from the warped area or use pliers / tweezers.

The only dodgy part of my Throgg model was where the cape joined at the shoulder and a few areas that required the removal of mould lines. A sharp modelling knife and some green stuff soon sorted this out.

 Basing:

After assembly and patching up any dodgy bits, I apply a coat of PVA glue to the top of the base and sprinkle (sparsely) a tiny amount of medium basing grit to represent a few larger stones on the ground then cover the rest of the base with sand.

 Painting:

I paint pretty quickly and would consider myself to be good but not great. My fellow bloggers, though they may be uncouth and short of stature, are however considerably more talented than I am.
(but less swift off the couch and on to the old production line – Looking at you TT Hobbit!)

Keeping that in mind, my painting guide will be pretty basic. I will split down the model into its main elements and tag the colours to each and will specify in what capacity or technique I'm using e.g. basecoat Khorne Red or Drybrush Dawnstone. I'll leave the smaller details for individual interpretation as these will have little impact on the overall look of the model.

 Undercoat: Chaos Black Spray.

Model Base: Basecoat with Rhinox Hide - Paint edge with Steel Legion Drab - Drybrush stones/sand with Karak Stone.
Mouth/Tongue: Basecoat Kantor Blue - Layer thin coat of Teclis Blue. (Note that there are a few bits here and there so do this bit first then avoid these areas when painting the skin).
Skin: Basecoat with Dark Reaper - Wash with Agrax Earthsade - Layer with thin coat of Mechanicus Standard Grey - Drybrush/Highlight raised skin areas with Dawnstone - Highlight raised spikey areas with Ulthuan Grey.
Cloak: Basecoat with Khorne Red - Wash with Carroburg Crimson - Layer with thin coat of Mephiston Red - Highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet.
Claws/Teeth: Basecoat with Kantor Blue - Layer with thin coat of Teclis Blue - Secondary layer with Ulthuan Grey - Highlight with a mix of Ulthuan Grey / Skull White. (letting some of the Teclis Blue show through here will give you the icy/cold feel).
Sledgehammer Stone: Basecoat with Mournfang Brown - Wash with Agrax Earthshade - layer with Karak Stone - Wash again with Agrax Earthshade - Highlight with a Drybrush of Karak Stone.

That should cover most of the model and have it (vaguely) resemble the picture in the army book.
The remaining areas are basically leathers and metals and the addition of a few tufts of static grass to the base.

All in all, it was a fairly painless project and did not take very long. I was very happy with the 'wintery' feel that comes through along with his 'earth/stone' troll heritage.

Winter has come....and Throgg will feast!
