Warhammer Fantasy - Scenery - Forgeworld Stone Bridge

Warhammer Fantasy - Forgeworld Stone Bridge

I like to keep an eye out for any reasonably priced editions of the Forgeworld fantasy scenery range. I picked this up on eBay as I’ve never managed to get my hands on any of their bridge range. It turned out a quick rescue job was all it needed. I obviously knew that it was painted and indeed it didn’t look too bad in the auction (see pic below). However I have had bad (and very bad) experiences with painted minis from eBay and I always want to make sure that my scenery collection looks cohesive. I’ve had pieces turn up and it has a fundamentally completely different stone colour and that has meant a complete repaint was required. So stone work and the ground surface (in this case road surface) would usually require some work to match my own collection anyway.

Upon arrival I was happy to see that it had been painted in citadel colours. The stonework had been given a single heavy dry brush of Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey (this is the starting point for my own Imperial terrain in fantasy) over a chaos black undercoat. The road surface had been given a Rhinox Hide base and a dry brush of Steel Legion Drab over this, again this aligns well with my standard practice. The seller had also used static grass and indeed the old citadel green cork flock in the same positions that I would have, so other than the fact it looked like it had then been dipped in a vat of furniture varnish (not really visible in the auction images) I was extremely happy with this purchase.

Re-Painting

First things first I dealt with the stonework, knowing I would tone back the shine with my Testers Dull Coat I cracked on as if I’d applied the base coat myself. I dry brushed the stonework with a series of lighter greys to pick out the higher surfaces and then gave the recesses a targeted shade, hitting under overhanging stonework and any areas that might get grimey to add depth and interest to the surface. This was undertaken with our old favourites Army Painter Strong Tone and Dark Tone. I have previously noted my concern with cloudy results from the Army Painter Washes range and this was not any different unfortunately. I deal with this within the flocking stage later.

I used various inks and washes from a wide range of suppliers (watered down) in a targeted application to add some variation in colour to the stonework. Then I homogenised the material again with a final light grey dry brush and Nuln Oil wash to Shade and hide the cloudy results of the Army Painter Washes where possible.

A final targeted wash of Althonian Camoshade was used to add green mossy tinges to the areas where this would naturally occur.

The road surface was paired back in areas as it had been given a heavy dry brush and given a final highlight of Karak Stone followed by Ushabti Bone.

The model was then taken outside and given a healthy coat of Testors Dull Coat (a very Matt varnish not available in the UK) to both protect and take the surfaces back from a very shiny varnish.

Hobby tip. Be careful to make sure you don’t use sprays in extreme conditions. Hot and cold days will make the spray act differently. Always store cans inside and don’t spray on particularly humid days...

Flocking

The road surface was given a few areas of scorched brown static grass to match my table and a few areas of dead leaves and model flowers and lavender (this is to match my Armies) and add some variety to the mini. The stonework faces where given areas of moss to take help bed it down further.
